Basic Operation

A computer is a device that can be instructed to carry out sequences of arithmetic or logical operations automatically via computer programming. Modern computers have the ability to follow generalized sets of operations, called programs. These programs enable computers to perform an extremely wide range of tasks.

A computer is composed of hardware and software, and can exist in a variety of sizes and configurations. The term hardware refers to the physical components of your computer such as the system unit, mouse, keyboard, monitor etc. The software is the instructions that makes the computer work.

The four basic types of computers are as under:
  • Supercomputer.
  • Mainframe Computer.
  • Minicomputer.
  • Microcomputer.
Five basic components of computer system
  • Input Unit.
  • Output Unit.
  • Storage Unit.
  • Central Processing Unit (CPU)
  • Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU)
  • Control Unit.
The hardware components—video card, processor, memory, motherboard and hard drive—are the same for all computer systems.
  • Central Processing Unit (CPU) The CPU is the “brains” of the computer. …
  • Random Access Memory (RAM) RAM is variable in a computer. …
